Being present to our homeless brother & his dog, Little Whip
One of our UPRISE movement-makers writes us today: “It is so very heartbreaking each day when I drive home and see at the bottom of the highway ramp, a middle-aged man and his adorable dog, begging for food and resources to help support them living out of their car…after weeks of giving several dollars (and dog chicken treats!) to them each time I passed by, I finally stopped…what is your name? I asked. My name is Alex, and meet my baby, Little Whip! I introduced myself and asked how they became homeless…I learned that they have been living in his truck for three years after his divorce. Then after working a 3rd shift all night at a manufacturing plant, Alex fell asleep the wheel of the car, veering off the road, nearly killing both of them. That event for him was all he needed to - give up his job and begin begging. I explained that there were two organizations in my community that were set up to assist him with both finding a place to live and a new job. I went the next day to the nonprofit, explained to them about Alex and Little Whip and they gave me their contact information, which I shared with Alex. Alex also said that Little Whip was very sick and bleeding. We took the dog over to my veterinarian who kindly saw the dog and treated her. My husband and I paid the vet bill to help out. I pray each day that Alex will hear the voice of the Holy Spirit encouraging him to visit the nonprofit and seek the help he deserves as a child of God. Thank you, UPRISE, for praying with me.” Oh Lord, two whom no one is a stranger, and from whose help no one is ever distant, look with compassion on those without a place to call home. Restore them, we pray, to housing of their own. Give us a kind heart to help the homeless in their many needs. We ask this prayer thought Christ our Lord, Amen.
